Report on APRICOT 2025

Attended APRICOT 2025

I am Yoshikawa, a committee in Home NOC. I participated in APRICOT 2025/APNIC 59, which was held in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, from February 19 to 27, 2025, and I would like to report on the event.

Additionally, our organization also participated in last year’s APRICOT 2024. You can read more about last year’s event and the significance of our participation in the report APRICOT2024に参加しました(jp only).

Significance of Participation

As introduced in last year’s report, our organization participates in APRICOT to raise awareness as a part of the Internet community and to engage in discussions on the proper operation of the Internet as an amateur AS.

Similar to last year, I also took part in Peering Personal and Peering Social, aiming to negotiate peering agreements and interact with peering partners.

In addition to these activities, this year I had new missions, including holding meetings with operators who had specific consultation requests and applying for the Lightning Talk to introduce our organization’s activities to a broader audience.

From February 19 to 22, APNIC Academy hosted workshops offering technical training, attended by APNIC Fellowship participants and engineers. Additionally, on February 23, aside from the workshops, APIX Meeting and various partner meetings were held.

From February 24 to 26, the main conference took place, featuring presentations on various network technologies and discussions on policies. As a member of Home NOC, I participated in these three days, attending sessions, meeting new peering partners, presenting at Peering Personal, and giving a Lightning Talk.

On the final day, February 27, the APNIC AGM (Annual General Meeting) was held, where reports on APNIC’s plans and budget were presented, and questions and feedback were directed to the EC and APNIC Secretariat. The results of the APNIC EC election were also announced. You can check the election results here.

Individual Meetings

At this APRICOT, meeting rooms were available, providing an environment for operators to discuss specific topics.

Our organization also held multiple meetings with operators, aiming to explore new peering opportunities and discuss future directions. I introduced our activities to people I met for the first time and received positive feedback from many attendees.

Additionally, there was a culture of taking photos together after meetings, and I had the opportunity to take many photos with people I spoke with at both the meetings and social events.

Peering Personal

At the APRICOT Peering Forum, there is a program called Peering Personal, where each operator introduces their AS within one minute.

Our organization also participated in Peering Personal. After our presentation, I received emails from those who were interested, and I was delighted to share more about our activities.

Lightning Talk

I was selected to present in the Lightning Talk, the final session before the Closing Plenary, where I spoke about our activities and the future of the Internet community in Asia.

The Lightning Talk format requires presentations to be within ten minutes, focusing on Internet operations and community topics. In our talk, I highlighted the shortage of young engineers in Japan’s network industry and proposed increasing the number of Personal/Research ASNs as a possible solution.

After the presentation, I received many reactions at the social, and some websites also covered our talk. This was our first time presenting at an international event, and I recognized the value of communicating our activities in English.

I aim to continue actively engaging internationally and contributing to the community.

Additionally, the presentation video is available on the APNIC YouTube Channel. It starts around the 46-minute mark:

Conclusion

This was my first time participating in an international event since the Asia Peering Forum last August.

Through APRICOT, I felt deeply connected to the Internet community in Asia. I was impressed by how actively people engage in discussions about community operations and strive for improvements, reinforcing the sense that we are all shaping the Internet together.

Moving forward, I hope to continue engaging actively and plan to participate in APRICOT 2026 in the Philippines.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported and interacted with us during this event.
