Participation at JANOG57 and Hosted BoF Session

This is Koichi HIRACHI. From February 11 to 13, 2026, JANOG57 was held over three days in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. Three members of our organization - Hirachi, Yoshikawa, and Kou - participated, organizing a “BoF session for discussing AS operations by individuals and small circles” as a casual BoF event on February 11.

This marks the seventh BoF session at JANOG, following JANOG56. Last time, we focused on sharing experiences, challenges, and best practices among individuals and small circles operating ASs. This time, we focused on more technical topics, engaging in practical and in-depth technical discussions on BGP design challenges unique to individual operators, as well as operational automation initiatives. Approximately 40 attendees joined both online and in-person.

The BoF session proceeded with the following program:

  • Yuka Mori, The Human-life Information Platforms Institute (Menhera.org):AS63806 Menhera® Updates” (20 minutes)
    • Presented on acquiring JPNIC Local Internet Registry (LIR) status, Tor operations, backbone infrastructure, and protocol development.
    • Questions and discussions were raised regarding the BBoD protocol for implementing electronic bulletin boards, among other topics.
  • Koichi Hirachi, Home NOC Operators’ Group:Operations and Automation Technologies Supporting AS59105” (20 minutes)
    • Presented on the behind-the-scenes of HomeNOC’s provisioning process, including the dashboard, Config Generator, and automation of Ether over IP tunnel configuration.
    • Also presented on the use of RFC 5549/8950 Extended Nexthop as a countermeasure for P2P address exhaustion.
    • During Q&A, discussions covered network configuration automation using NixOS with GitHub CI/CD, and the reasons for adopting FreeBSD.
  • Asei Sekiguchi and Hirotaka Nakajima, Japan Community IX:JCIX Updates” (20 minutes)

  • Mio Fukushima, BBIX Corporation:‘The Ultimate Playground for Students’ Concept Update” (5 minutes)
    • Presented on the progress of the “Ultimate Playground for Students” concept, which aims to provide students with opportunities to freely engage in BGP operations.
    • The initiative is scheduled to launch in spring 2026, with ongoing discussions with partner companies.
