Announcement of the start of Fukuoka POP operation

About Fukuoka POP (POP53)

On July 11, 2022, our organization opened a new location, POP53, in the Aso Business Computer College in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Fukuoka Prefecture is located in the northern part of Kyushu, one of the four main islands of Japan. Fukuoka POP will be operated in collaboration with a team of students, with our organization providing the network devices.

Building work with student members

In the Kyushu-Okinawa region, the community of Internet engineers has become more active in recent years. This can be seen in the activities of QUNOG (Kyushu Okinawa Network Operators Group) and the establishment of connection points in Fukuoka Prefecture by three commercial Internet exchanges (JPIX/BBIX/JPNAP).

We will also contribute to the development of the Internet in the Kyushu-Okinawa region by opening Fukuoka POP and actively supporting students who aim to become network engineers.

Notes on Fukuoka POP

  • Please do not inquire directly to the school about the Fukuoka location. We are not accepting tours at this time. If you have any questions, please contact us through one of our regular members, board members, or student members.

  • Our network users can connect to the Fukuoka POP. However, the connection method is limited to EtherIP, and GRE tunnels and IP-IP tunnels are not available. We are also not accepting incoming dark fiber or guarantee lines at this time. If you would like to change your connection to the Fukuoka POP, please contact the our support team.

  • Fukuoka POP has power outages once a year due to legal inspections of electrical facilities. In addition, physical operations are student-driven, so recovery in the event of failure may take time. If you wish to connect to Fukuoka POP, it is strongly recommended to use BGP for a redundant connection.

  • The uplink for the Fukuoka POP is connected to the core routers in Tokyo and Osaka. Osaka has priority for communication to other global ASes according to IGP Metric when BGP attributes are equivalent. Connections from Fukuoka to other ASes in Kyushu are looped back in Tokyo or Osaka. This is because there is no connection to other global ASes in Fukuoka.
